After sunset, Raven and I took our time waking up, like usual. We werenât exactly eager to start the day. I didnât think we ever qualified as bright-eyed or bushy-tailed. After the rest of the group had cleared from the rooftop, she turned to me with an appraising look. Sheâd been waiting to pounce.
She flicked her long mohawk out of her eyes and smirked. âSo, what are you going to do about it?â
I scowled and tied my wavy hair back with a leather band. âDo about what?â
âLuna,â she crooned. Raven made her name sound like a song. âI saw her touching you this morning. Thereâs no way I noticed, and you didnât.â
I clenched my jaw tight and looked over the buildingâs edge. A car backfired from somewhere close by, followed by shouts. I wondered if it would be a busy night. I could use it. Raven and I often prowled the streets together, while the other gargoyles spent time in the cathedral. Staying still for too long made me want to crawl out of my own skin. Raven and I both needed the release of fighting in the shadows, or weâd go insane. We had often wondered what made us different from the rest of the team. We were often cold and quiet, happiest only when we were off in the night. I didnât think we had exactly been carved to be team players.
Raven took my silence for annoyance, and she sighed. âMaybe we take the night off? I could use a little action of a different kind.â
I nodded in understanding. Raven and I usually only spent our nights apart if we were on the prowl for a different kind of target. I mean, we were close, but we werenât that close. There were creepy twins, and then there were creepy incest twins, and we were definitely not that. Besides, my presence would have only cramped Ravenâs style. We were into the same kind of women, except usually the women who were into Raven werenât into me.
She hopped off of the ledge completely and narrowed her eyes. âYou know, Iâm sure Luna would help you if asked. Sheâs actually very cool for a human. Iâm bummed sheâs straight.â
I smirked. âHow do you know sheâs straight?â
Raven rolled her eyes. âPlease, have you seen her look at you, Draven, and Asher? She looks at you three like itâs an all-you-can-eat buffet. It kind of makes me respect her even more.â
I hopped down and pulled my ratty sweater sleeves further down on my arms. I was still in yesterdayâs clothes. No matter what happened tonight, I needed a shower and fresh change.
We walked toward the rooftop door, and I kicked a pebble across the stone with a clatter. âYeah, well, thatâs just it? Itâs very obvious Luna has something going on with Draven. Maybe even Asher, honestly. Besides, I could find someone else.â
Raven snorted again and stopped in her tracks. âNo, you couldnât. That little stunt you pulled last night? You would never have done that, not for anyone.
